Physical Education
At Rushcombe First School, we believe that the provision of high-quality physical education is an integral part of a child’s development.
The PE curriculum for Foundation and Year 1 children focuses upon the development of effective motor function, large muscle development, eye-hand co-ordination, balance and rhythm, through a range of engaging activities. At this stage, children are introduced to simple team games, begin to develop their ball skills and take part in a range of dance, gymnastic and athletic activities.
As children move through Years 2, 3 and 4, they are introduced to a range of team and individual sports, developing their key skills, along with an understanding of some of the basic rules / tactics. Children in all year groups are also provided with opportunities to think creatively about their physical development, designing their own games and activities in small groups to help them develop a range of physical and collaborative skills.
In addition to the structured PE curriculum, a range of sports and physical opportunities are provided through the school’s extra-curricular activities, including clubs and at playtimes. The school’s football team and gymnastics squad regularly compete in local tournaments against other local schools. The school also works with a range of external coaches to supplement the expertise of the teaching staff and to enable children to experience a wide range of sporting activities.
