Philosophy Sessions

When you mention the word ‘philosophy’, many people will automatically think of a group of academics discussing the big questions of life. Not many people would automatically picture a group of 4 and 5 year olds engaging in conversation about similar questions – but this is what happens in our Philosophy sessions in school. Philosophy sessions are an important part of our curriculum, providing children with the opportunity to explore a range of philosophical questions and to learn how to engage in respectful collaborative discussion with others. They learn how to express their ideas, how to listen to others and how to think carefully, including considering different perspectives, making connections and developing their own hypotheses. During their time at Rushcombe, we aim for your child to enjoy engaging with a range of philosophical questions linked to metaphysics (the nature of being), aesthetics (the nature of beauty), ethics (the nature of morality) and epistemology (the nature of knowledge), and to grow as philosophers in their own right. In doing so, we aim to prepare children with the thinking and collaboration skills to help solve the challenges of the world they are entering into.
