As part of our ‘Continental Explorers’ Learning Adventure, the school recently held our ‘Children’s Festival of Peace’, which was a beautiful and thought-provoking event to mark the end of this special project. On the day, each year group delivered a performance they had been developing, which communicated the idea of peace. During the festival, our Early Years children performed a wonderful song about sharing and friendship, our Year 1 children performed an amazing gumboot dance (derived from Africa) and shared how they had written a letter to a school in Kenya, our Year 2 children read some beautiful poetry about peace and staged a dance about carrying the message of peace around the world, our Year 3 children performed a role play about discovering the Tree of Life and a dance based upon the rivers of the world connecting us all together, whilst our Year 4 children narrated the festival, staged a wonderful rap and dance and also read a range of powerful speeches calling for world peace. It was a truly heart-warming and moving event, which would surely have made all adults think about the world we are looking to create for our children. Across the school day, the children also engaged in a range of peace themed activities in their classrooms, including thinking personally about their hopes for a peaceful world and creating art works to represent this. This wonderful finale was a fitting end to an exciting Learning Adventure, drawing together the children’s explorations of the continents they were studying into a global perspective about shared humanity.
